Following Matija Čop's tragic death, his parents authorised France Prešeren to handle their son's legacy. The inventory of his legacy included a silver watch, glasses, some clothes, bed linen and tablecloths, a chest for clothes and four chests of books. Books were the greatest worth of Čop's assets. There were about 2,000 of them, and their estimated value was 644 goldinars. Miha Kastelic, the editor of Kranjska čbelica, later bought Cop's books and, following the linguist's death, became a deputy in the Lyceum Library. Kastelic later sold off most of the books from Čop's legacy.
